Best Spots for Kids Haircuts in the Fort Worth Area

My girls love going to the salon for a haircut. They love feeling grown up and selecting a new hair do. And who doesn't? I admit I love having someone else wash and style my hair... Despite all of my best efforts (and a bevy of haircare products!), I can never replicate for myself the magic my stylist performs when she takes my medium brown, frizzy, string-straight locks and transforms them into shiny blond curls. Simply amazing!

For my girls through the years, we've bounced back and forth between getting cuts from regular salons and going to places that cater to kids. My oldest, almost 12, is getting "too cool" for kid spots, but my youngest, 7, still enjoys sitting in a car chair and watching cartoons while a stylist clips off her split ends and brings her curls back to life.

If you're looking for a spot in the greater Fort Worth area that caters to kids' cuts, I've made a spectacular list for you! While I'm not a master stylist, I do consider myself a master braider! And if you are looking for tips on how to braid long hair, please check out my article I did for Zulily here!

French braiding hair takes practice... But once you get the hang of it, it's fun to create braids in your child's hair!

Where to Get your Kiddo an Awesome Haircut in the Fort Worth Area

- Sweet & Sassy Southlake-  Boy moms, take note! Sweet & Sassy is not just for girls! This sweet spot will treat your kiddo to a hair cut and a lollipop- glitter optional. Sign up for their email updates and get alerts about days when cuts go on sale- they frequently do promos where you can get a cut for your child's age! Nothing beats a $7 haircut for my youngest that comes with a fancy braid and glitter hair spray at the end. This spot is our favorite for kids' haircuts in the Fort Worth area.

- Sharkey's Cuts for Kids- With locations in Watauga and Southlake, Sharkey's Cuts for a Kids is a great option for kids haircuts in Fort Worth. Kids can watch television or play XBox while an expert stylist transform their locks. You can schedule appointments online to get your kiddo's haircut and then stop by the train-stop McDonald's I post about regularly for lunch or a snack. Perfect summertime afternoon for you and the kids!

- Cookie Cutters Haircuts for Kids- This salon has two locations in the area- Burleson and west Fort Worth. Kids can pick which "car chair" they sit in to get their hair done as well as choose from a wide selection of games and shows to watch during the process. This salon is also great for special needs kids. Book your appointment online at their website or on their app.

- Pigtails & Crewcuts- You can drop into this spot for so much more than just a haircut for your kiddo... Get mom or dad a haircut during your visit. Or ask about ear piercing! Pigtails and Crewcuts, located next to Sprouts in Southlake, is very clean with friendly staff that listens to what your kiddo's want in terms of a hair cut.

- Cool Cuts 4 Kids- Located near Hulen Mall, this Fort Worth salon caters to kids- but also offers styles for the whole family at great prices. The salon features "entertainment zones" for kids who aren't interested in sitting still very long. Plus, they carry Original Sprout products, one of my favorite lines of kids' products ever!

- KaZaam's Kutz for All Ages- This Arlington spot is perfect for kiddos! It's located on Cooper Street inside Whitehaven Studio. Cuts are only $21 and kids can sit in a salon chair that looks like Lightning McQueen from Disney's Cars. Inexpensive and convenient... Score!

How to Recycle a Car Seat

Car Seat Recycling

If your child is ready for his or her next car seat, or has outgrown car seats entirely, you may be wondering what to do with the old one. You can donate it, sell it or participate in a car seat recycling program where you can earn a discount on a new car seat. There are several considerations to take, however, before you pass the car seat on to a new child.

Keeping your kids safe on the road is so important! Recycle old car seats when they are past their prime.

Car seats, designed to keep a child who doesn’t yet meet the height or weight requirements for a regular seat safe, are expensive. Because children grow so quickly, car seats also can be quite the investment you have to make every few years. You may dread shopping for a new car seat, and, if you are are like me, you may not even be sure what you are supposed to do with the old one.

If you aren't sure what type of car seat your child should be in, no worries! Children should be in car seats until the age of 12, and shouldn't ride in the front seat of a vehicle until age 13 (these are, however, recommendations, and not laws). I did an entire article for Zulily about when a child can ride in a booster seat and the article is jam-packed with info. Click here to read it!

Car Seat Recycling: When to Toss an Old Car Seat

Consider Your Car Seat’s Expiration Date

Just like food, car seats come with an expiration date. This date is printed on every car seat and can usually be found on the side or back of a car seat. A car seat’s expiration date is six years after the date it was manufactured.

If you are like me, you might be thinking this date is just a suggestion. In my house, we don't toss cereal boxes on their expiration date unless the cereal tastes off. So... Dates are a little arbitrary. I wondered if car seat expiration dates were the same way.

However, with car seats, the expiration dates does matter. This date matters because it is the length of time the manufacturer can guarantee the frame of the car seat will hold up in the event of an accident. After that date, the integrity of the structure can no longer be relied upon to protect a child in the event of a collision. If your car seat is past its expiration date, it should be tossed- it should not be donated or given to friends.

When your child outgrows her car seat, before you pass it on or try to sell it, check the expiration date and check for recalls. The car seat may simply need to be disposed of.

BOLO: Time to Toss Your Car Seat if it has been Recalled

It may feel hard to keep up with the number of car seat recalls that hit the market every year, but they are important to pay attention to. If a car seat is recalled, it is because that car seat is no longer a safe spot for your kiddo.

If your car seat has been recalled, you can do a couple of things with it:

- Toss it

- Recycle it

- Figure out what part of the car seat is recalled and apply the appropriate repairs. For example, if a car seat's safety latch is recalled, the company may offer to send out free safety latch repair kits. You can apply this fix and then continue to use the car seat. However, you should only try to fix the recalled car seat if the manufacturer offers this fix. Do not try to fix it yourself using aftermarket pieces.

Not sure if your car seat has been recalled or just want to check? The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration keeps an updated recall list here

Your Car Seat has been Involved in an Accident

If your car seat has been involved in an accident, however minor, it is time for the car seat to go. If your airbags deployed in an accident, even if there were no injuries to passengers, you need a new car seat.

That may seem like overkill- car seats are expensive! This one is fine! There are no outward signs of trauma to this car seat. It's fine. However, just because you can't see any problems, it doesn't mean they don't exist. If your car seat has been involved in an accident, it's time to get a new one. The structural integrity may have been compromised, and, just because you can't see anything wrong, it doesn't mean there aren't problems. Better safe than sorry.

If there was an insurance claim pertaining to the accident, check with your insurance company! They should be able to provide you with some money to put toward the purchase of a new car seat.

Car Seat Recycling: Disposing of Old Car Seats

 Recycling an Old Car Seat

If your car seat is past the expiration date, or if it has been involved in an accident of any type, that car seat should be recycled or thrown away rather than donated or passed on to others. To find places that will accept your old car seat, check out recycleyourcarseat.org. Different recycling centers will have different requirements for recycling your old car seat, so be sure to check out any steps you have to take beforehand. You can also go to carseatrecycling.com, and, for a fee, purchase a kit that will enable you to recycle your car seat quickly and easily regardless of where you live or the car seat’s brand. You will even receive a coupon to apply to the purchase of a new car seat from Clek

Throwing Away an Old Car Seat

If there aren't any recycling centers near you, you may need to simply toss your car seat in the garbage. In order to ensure that your car seat is not plucked from the curb by well-meaning garbage pickers, try to make your car seat undesirable by cutting straps or damaging the car seat in other ways. If the car seat is past its expiration date or has been involved in an accident or a recall, it is not safe to be reused.

Recycling Programs and Trade-In Events at Nationwide Retailers

Nationwide retailers like Target and Walmart usually do a national trade-in program yearly that enables you to bring an old car seat in to recycle and receive a discount toward a new car seat in exchange. Target's took place in April of 2021, and Walmart has yet to announce a 2021 trade-in date, but the 2019 event was huge so it may make a comeback in 2021.

Where to Get a Covid-19 PCR Test for School, Camp, or Travel and How Much a PCR Test Will Cost in Arlington

We are traveling out of the country for Memorial Day, and I'm starting to panic about getting a negative Covid test before we go. Where do I go? What is the process? How much will it cost? These are all questions running through my brain. So I asked my amazing friend Kara Roberson for her help in this matter because she had recently gotten a test and knows all the things about testing. She wrote the below article with SO much helpful information and I'm so grateful! Hopefully everyone can benefit from her knowledge as much as I have!

If you aren't traveling for Memorial Day but are still looking for fun ways to celebrate with the kids, I just did a great article for Zulily all about celebrating the holiday to honor those servicemen and women who died while serving.

Where to Get a Covid-19 PCR Test for School, Camp, or Travel and How Much a PCR Test Will Cost in Arlington

If you are traveling to a destination that requires a negative PCR Covid test, planning to send your child to the summer camps that require a negative test, or if your child goes to a school that requires a negative PCR Covid test if they exhibit one of the 11 symptoms to the right, then we have the run down for where to go to get a negative PCR Covid test.

What is a PCR Test?

A PCR test stands for polymerase chain reaction test. This is a diagnostic test that determines if you are infected by analyzing a sample to see if it contains genetic material from the virus. Many organizations have stated that they find it more reliable and so this is the test they require for proof of a negative result.

How Much Do Covid PCR Tests Cost?

The cost varies, starting from free to under $10 to hundreds of dollars, depending on whether your health insurance will cover the test, or if you will be paying.

Where to Get FREE Covid PCR Tests

You can get tested for free at all Curative sites. Go to HERE, enter your zip code and fill out the form to schedule your appointment. The first time we used them at the end of February, it took 48 hours to get results. In late March it took 48 hours. Your length of time will depend on how many tests are in their lab. Their website says you will receive the results digitally within 1-2 days.

Four Reasons I prefer the Curative Test:

1)      It is a mouth swab. It is NOT the somewhat painful nasal test.

2)      It is quick. I have now gone three times, and I have never had to wait.

3)      It is a drive thru. I don’t get out and wait with other people who may actually have Covid-19.

4)      I administer the test on my child while they watch. This is more comfortable for my child.

Where to Get a Quick Covid PCR Test

If you do not have 48 hours to wait on the negative Covid results, I recommend Community Med in Arlington. They switched from the rapid tests to the PCR tests and had results for me in an hour. It is the nasal swab test. They provide comprehensive COVID-19 Rapid PCR, Rapid Antigen, and Blood-Antibody testing.

They have clinic hours every day. Mon – Sat: 8am – 8pm and Sun: 12pm – 8pm. They are In-Network with most major insurances, have cash-pay – An amount will be collected at visit depending on which test is administered.

Other Covid Testing Locations

Urgent Care for Kids has locations in Arlington and Mansfield. They only test kids for Covid-19. They have online check in for kids here. If your insurance does not cover testing, they charge $150 for self-pay. They do rapid tests and PCR tests. Results for their PCR tests take 3-7 days.

CVS offers Rapid and Drive thru PCR lab testing which takes 1-2 days for results but may take longer if they have large volume of labs. If your insurance covers testing, it is free.

Urgent Care offers PCR testing with results typically taking 2-3 days to get results.
