Crazy for LuluPops!

Literally, my trio went crazy IN the Lulupops store this afternoon... (I suppose that's what I get for taking them during the "crazy phase" that takes place after all three of mine are home from school...)

I was lured in to Lulupops by a Facebook post on its page promoting $2 cake pops during their "Poppy Hour" from 4 to 5 pm on weekdays. Maybe it's my third trimester talking, but I'm definitely answering the sweets call this week! (Monday it was Iceland Ice Cream, and I'll debut a review of a fun new candy shop I've found in town on Friday!).

Lulupops is located at the corner of Green Oaks and Park Springs, directly across the street from Boles Junior High (the Yankee in me had to resist writing Middle School). The store's grand opening was less than two weeks ago, and I'm so glad it's here now!

The decor inside is simple and fun. It actually reminds me of a store I would see in LA- very modern and bright. White and pink- lovely!

The menu is simple- multiple flavors of cake pops, a few beverage choices, French Macaroons and banana pudding.

I had to read my trio all of the available options, although two of them ended up choosing on color alone. (Ha! No one should be even a bit surprised that my youngest chose pink) It was a tough call to make- my oldest and I had to think about it a bit... Twix, Snickers, Red Velvet, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Lemon, Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough to name a few. After much deliberation, we ordered: Chocolate chip cookie dough (mom), red velvet (oldest), vanilla (middle) and strawberry (youngest). It was a tough choice, but as each of use gobbled down our picks, I would say we all chose wisely!

My cake pop was lovely! The flavor was just right. I could have eaten about 10 more, but I do practice some restraint, at least in public. My oldest was upset I wouldn't buy her a second cake pop, but I felt it wise to not destroy her appetite for dinner with delicious cake pops.

The inside of the store is small- there are only two stools for sitting- so next time I will likely grab cake pops and go instead and dragging my trio inside. But these would make a fun addition to any party you are hosting- office birthday party, baby shower, going away party, etc.

Now get over there an enjoy "Poppy Hour!"

Iceland Ice Cream for the Win!

For the past week, my Facebook newsfeed has been filled with posts of delicious-looking creations from Iceland Ice Cream, a new ice cream shop in the old Kid to Kid building on Arbrook Blvd., just east of S. Cooper St. Not one to not be up on current around-town happenings, I dragged the trio there tonight to try out the treats. (It also didn't hurt that I won a free ice cream on FB for sharing the shop's post last week... Super score!)

The trio and I are happy to report that Iceland did NOT disappoint!
It took us some time to go over the menu options. I have one die-hard vanilla fan, one gotta-have-chocolate girl and one that changes her mind like Taylor Swift changes boyfriends. We had to start by choosing a flavor, then choosing a mix in, and lastly adding toppings (up to 3). Each cup costs $5.99 and they only have one size. If I had gotten to choose, I totally would have gone with green tea with a peach mix-in, but I'll have to save that for next time!
My oldest chose chocolate with a graham cracker mix-in topped with gummy bears and m&m's. My two littles chose vanilla with a strawberry mix-in topped with sprinkles and m&m's.

It's as cool to watch the ice cream being made as it is to enjoy the ice cream! My girls loved watching the employees pour the flavor onto the cold grill and chop and stir their mix-ins until the concoction froze. My middle daughter's favorite part was watch the employees then "roll up" the ice cream to prepare it to be served. I have to admit- it was pretty neat! I've never seen anything like it. (They even have a video of the ice cream being made on a continuous loop on a TV affixed to the wall, so my girls got to enjoy the show again and again!)

The results of their work were so yummy to enjoy! We gobbled down three cups between the four of us... And this preggo could have eaten a fourth, I'll be honest. Not only was the presentation one of the prettiest I've ever seen (as far as ice cream goes, anyway), the consistency was fantastic! It was cold and not unlike ice cream I'd buy for the girls at Kroger, but it was easier to eat because the rolls sort of melted right in your mouth. It was also easier for my girls to serve themselves because the ice cream crumbled easily onto the spoons- no struggling the way you would with store-bought ice cream.

I highly recommend giving this place a try- you won't regret it!
Word to the wise: They do not take credit cards for purchases less than $10... So bring cash if you are only wanting one cup, or be prepared to buy two.
(They also have another FB contest up this week for free ice cream... Just search their name and like, share and tag friends on their current giveaway post!)

Cheers!

In the last of my money-making in the area installments this week…

Ever wonder about those people you see at the State Fair, handing out freebies for major brands such as Sensodyne or Jeep?

Or the people you see as you are leaving a Cowboys game, handing out energy drinks or hangover cures?
(I'm in the Cheese-o-saurus costume at the implosion of the old Cowboys Stadium. No, really, I am. I made $250 to spend 4 hours (30 mins in, 30 mins resting) in that costume. I can't make this stuff up...)

How about the girl you see at your favorite bar, dressed in a branded shirt, handing out free beers or shots?

I don’t wonder about those girls… Because I’ve been those girls.

For the past 16 years, I’ve been a brand ambassador. A promotional model. A marketing representative. A brand advocate. Whatever you want to call the position I’ve taken… Been there, done that.

Now, before you feel sorry for me, thinking how much it must suck to have to brave the drunks that leave local concert venues or the high-class individuals that frequent the state fair, stop. Don’t feel bad for me or wonder what I did to end up there.

Save for a few bad experiences throughout the years, I’ve enjoyed my years as a promo model. If you name a major brand- I’ve represented it or a major competitor. I’ve worked at all sorts of amazing events- celebrity signings, Taste of Dallas, the State Fair, countless concerts. I’ve worked at Walmart, I’ve worked in bars. I’ve worked at high-brow dinners and benefits and at various high school football games. I’ve driven branded vehicles around the country and have been flown to each coast multiple times for trainings and team bonding.

Meeting Death Cab for Cutie

It really hasn’t been bad at all!

In fact, I still work events when I have the chance. Two weeks ago I worked a fancy corporate lunch. I greeted clients as they arrived. I was comped free lunch and parking at made $150 for a few hours of “work.” In two weeks, I’m working a gluten-free fair in Dallas. I’m a regular at corporate trainings in north Fort Worth, where I help facilitate corporate team bonding. I’m consistently receiving emails to work at Rangers games or Cowboys games, to work at various concerts that pass through town.
How much is your time worth, you ask? Promo gigs typically start around $15 per hour and go up to about $30 per hour. You work as an independent contractor, meaning no taxes are withheld (you are responsible for those at tax time). You also don’t receive any benefits from the company you are contracting with- $15 an hour is just $15 an hour, free and clear. It also takes about six weeks to receive payment. This can be the downside of promo modeling… If you need cash by Friday, promo modeling is not the way to go about it.

Some of the perks, though, beyond a decent hourly pay, make it totally worth the gig. I’ve walked away from gigs with loads of freebies, ranging from boxes with 100s of bags of chips for my girls lunches to Visa gift cards worth $100s. Most often you are told specifically what to wear, so there is no stressing over an outfit. You usually get to keep the tshirt you are given. I’ve also been given free shoes to wear (and keep!) at the end of an event. I’ve gotten to see concerts I never would have seen, meet celebrities I never would have met and bond with people I have nothing in common with during my promo days. It’s really a fun lifestyle, if you can swing the inconsistencies.

I'm in the middle costume. No, really... Costume-character gigs are some of the highest paying. And the best part? You don't have to talk to anyone!

Like with any job, there are downsides. You may find the perfect gig for you- and you are one of 100s of applicants and you don’t get chosen. For every about 10 gigs I apply to, I get picked for 2 or 3. Work also tends to come in clusters… State Fair is a crazy-busy time of year with steady work for the duration. The holidays are typically an easy time to find work. But January and February are typically much slower, so you have to budget for the months when you are “off” involuntarily. You need to be an organized, self-managed worker. When I book a job, I clock my miles to and from, plus any parking or meals I pay for during working hours. Then I keep a spreadsheet of the date I worked and for what company, and email the booking agent so I’m clear on when I can expect payment, and I put that in my spreadsheet as well (I’ve had to chase down more than a check or two through the years- that part isn’t fun!). You also need to be outgoing- oftentimes you are asked to call out to or approach people at various venues in an attempt to get them to sample your product. Introverts need not apply.

If I haven’t scared you off, read on for a few of my favorite companies that staff locally. You can submit your info on their Websites to join their mailing lists. Then you can start applying to jobs that appeal to you as you please!

A few things to remember: You will apply to many, but only get picked for a few, until you make a name for yourself. Once companies know you are reliable and hardworking, they will call you to work instead of you calling them. Once you are booked- do not cancel unless it’s an emergency. Cancel once and that company probably won’t call you back. Worse yet- don’t no-show. No-show and that company will not only never call you back, but they will share your name with all their agency friends and you’ll never book another promotional gig.

There are lots of FB support groups for promo models, should you find yourself loving the promo world.

Lastly, I’m happy to answer any questions you may have! Though I’m hardly the expert these days, I have loads of friends in the industry I can point you toward! One friend just got back from the East Coast, where he was managing a tour for a major razor brand. Two friends have been members of the a high-end car team for several years- meaning they travel the country every weekend talking about Audi at car shows and tradeshows and for corporate clients. And lots of my friends are gearing up for a three-week go at the State Fair opening next month. It’s fun work if you can get it…

Fancy a Treat?

Sometimes, at the end of a long school day, work day, just any day, really, you deserve a treat!

Heck- most days I convince myself I deserve a treat! Ha!

And there is nothing like seeing my girls smile as they pick out a cupcake, cake pop, ice cream cone or other sweet treat.

Read on for some of my favorite spots!

A few of my favorite "chains":

Yummy ice cream from the Braum's Website

1. Braum's- this is our go-to because there is one close to our house and they have loads of yummy flavors! Plus the prices are so reasonable it's hard to resist!

2. Wendy's- right now, Wendy's has $.50 frostys- yum! Two of my girls love chocolate and one loves vanilla- and I love that I can treat them all for less than $2!

3. Starbucks- my girls love birthday cake pops from Starbucks. They are a bit pricey ($1.50 a piece), but, I admit, they are the perfect-sized yummy treat!

Local ice cream spots:

Delicious-looking ice cream from Iggy's Italian Ice Facebook page.

1. Helado's Ice Cream and Pops: (1007 E. Broad St., Mansfield)- refreshing popsicles and ice creams to cool you off on a hot day! Flavors such as passion fruit, mango and chile and strawberry agave will make your day!

2. Iggy's Italian Ice (3807 E Broad St, Mansfield)- more than 40 flavors made in store daily! There is a combo for everyone!

3. Maxfrut: (1730 W. Randol Mill Rd., Arlington)- gourmet popsicle treats! I love the coffee pop and my girls love any of the fruit-flavored ones!

4. Mad Mike's Ice Cream: (2304 W. Park Row, Pantego)- I'm in love with the coffee latte flavor and mint chocolate chip. I'm not creative with my ice cream and I'm okay with that!

5. Coolberry Frozen Yogurt: (312 Lincoln Sq., Arlington)- Frozen yogurt is my fave. Fave. Fave. Confession: sometimes I skip a meal to eat a large cup of original tart from Coolberry topped with raspberries, strawberries and chocolate chips. There. I admitted it.

Non-frozen treats:

Photo from Lulupops FB page (BTW- I NEED these!)

1. Crunch Donuts: (3200 S. Cooper St., Arlington)- If you haven't been to Crunch yet, you are missing out! They have the most decadent donut creations... But if nothing they've made strikes your fancy- you can create your own donut. AND they are open 24 hours. I mean- what are you waiting for?!

2. Lulupops by Lina (3851 SW Green Oaks, Arlington)- this place opened last weekend and I can't wait to try them out! I mean- I LOVE cake pops- and the ones they've posted on their Facebook page for Labor Day look divine!

3. Sugar Bee Sweets: (2410 W. Abram St., Arlington)- there isn't one sweet treat in this store that I don't want to stuff in my face. Seriously. The cookies. The cupcakes. I want it ALL.

What places have I missed (I know there are loads)? Post your favorites in the comments!

Extra money to give my opinion? Why not?!

A friend called me today while I was driving to Dallas and immediately asked… “Why are you going to Dallas?”

I told her I was selected to participate in a focus group there, to which she replied “You always have these cool ways to make extra money! How do you hear about these places?’

So, to continue with the money-making theme I started this week, I thought I would give you all some insight into making money via focus groups and product testing!

(Yes, this is an Arlington blog. No, none of the places I’m going to list are in Arlington. However, if you are willing to drive, or work in the areas of these places, you can make some fabulous quick money for participating! Most the time, it’s totally worth it!)

A word about focus groups:

Start by going to the Websites listed and sign up on their pages. Sign up will take a bit. Then, you will start getting pre-screeners in your email.

A word of caution: I probably get emailed 10-15 screeners PER WEEK. Each screener takes between 5-10 minutes to complete. I probably qualify for one focus group for every 50-75 screeners I fill out. So, yeah. Sometimes it sucks. But don’t get discouraged!

Through the years, I’ve probably done more than 50 focus groups. I’ve done focus groups on TV shows, hair products, chocolate, handbags, prenatal vitamins- you name it! I’ve been paid anywhere from $100-$250 for 1-2 hours of my time. Sometimes, the market researchers come to you, which is amazing! I’ve welcomed several teams of people into my homes through the years. Likewise, sometimes researchers go to places such as Starbucks or Panera and talk to subjects. These rock, too, because they are so close! While they used to pay in cash and checks, I now most often receive my payment in Visa gift/check cards. Just another piece of info for you to digest!

Most often, though, I’ve driven to Las Colinas or North Dallas to participate in these studies. Usually I plan these studies around trips I need to take to the area anyway or go visit friends in the area before or afterward. But sometimes I just suck it up and drive the 70 miles roundtrip and tell myself the cash was worth it! Today I got a bonus: $15 worth of gourmet chocolate on top of my $150 payout.

Another word to the wise: You will not get called if you don’t qualify. Usually, at the end of a screener, you will know if you qualified or not. Even if you do, it doesn’t guarantee a phone call or booking. They are looking for people that fit the specific molds of their client. Again- don’t get discouraged! When they want you, they will find you!

Some of the sites I’m going to list are virtual focus groups, meaning you don’t have to go anywhere! You log into their private sites once or twice a day for two to three days and answer questions posted by moderators. These typically pay less, but when you don’t have to leave your house, it’s totally okay!

A few of these sites are usability testing sites. Meaning it is you and a researcher one on one, going through a specific Website or product idea. These typically pay more.

I’ve also done product testing through several of these companies, where I receive a product to review and keep in lieu of a paycheck. In the past, I’ve received car seats, highchairs, razors and more! Sometimes I’ve resold the item on buy sell trade sites for instant cash if I knew I would never use it. But I’ve gotten some great products. My youngest still rides in the $300 carseat I got free two years ago!

If you get nervous in front of groups or don’t like to talk freely about your opinions, these probably aren’t the money-making groups for you…

Stuffed Closets? Unload Your Old Stuff For Cash!

If you are like me, you have loads of extra stuff hanging around your house. Honestly, I don’t even know where it all comes from. Having three girls, I have enough princess dresses to rival the Disney Store and more jeans and t-shirts than the local Gap. Sometimes, I need more cash and less stuff.
Luckily, we have lots of great shops in the area that will take your old clothes and pay you cash on the spot. Read on to find out how you can make some instant cash money for your old stuff!

Have gently-used kids’ stuff?

Tips to sell here:

Launder your clothes first- don’t bring in things with stains or holes.

Make sure all pieces of toys, puzzles, etc. are together. Skip bringing in broken toys.

Be ready to sell your items for very little. They buy with fixed prices- example- pants are worth $.50-$1 depending. Yes, even if they are brand name/designer/super expensive.

Little Giggles Resale (5904 S. Cooper St., Arlington) is my go-to spot to sell my girls’ old clothes. I love Little Giggles because they have a kids’ play area with Legos and a TV to entertain my monkeys while I browse and buyers shop through my items. Little Giggles take kids clothes up to size 16, as well as items such as strollers, bikes, dolls and toys. They will offer you cash on the spot for anything they buy, or you can get a higher return if you accept store credit in lieu of cash. This is great if you need more jeans, shoes, whatever for your growing kiddo! Little Giggles also sells new-with-tags dancewear and bows.

Kid To Kid (3500 S. Cooper St., Arlington) is another great spot to resell kids’ goods. It is similar to Little Giggles in most respects. Like Little Giggles, they also accept maternity wear! You can also buy brand uniform pieces, bows and dancewear. They, too, offer a higher return if you accept store credit instead of cash. They also have a coloring table at the back of the store to entertain kiddos while you wait on your buy!

Another great option for kids’ resale is Rhea Lana Consignment Sales. These sales are held in Mansfield a few times a year. The great part about consignment sales is that you set the price! You then bring home 60-70% of the selling price per item. This is especially great if you are like me and gravitate toward more expensive kids’ items (I used to work for True Religion and my girls literally have 5 pairs of jeans that cost AT LEAST $60… I probably shouldn’t admit that, huh?!). However, these sales only come around a few times a year, so if you have a pile of stuff filling up your formal dining (ahem, sorry husband, I’m working on that!), this isn’t the best option for you…

Have gently-used women’s (and men’s!) wear?

Plato’s Closet (5904 S. Cooper St., Arlington- just a few doors down from Little Giggles!) will buy your trendy shoes, handbags, jewelry and clothes for instant cash. Beware- they are super brand-conscious and want items that are 18 months old or newer. Also- think junior’s section for Plato’s Closet. Brands such as Ann Taylor and Banana Republic aren’t this store’s style, but if you have a closet full of Rue 21, Hollister and the like, this is your go-to store!

Hut No. 8 (121 W. Debbie Lane, Mansfield) is another awesome local option. They search for items similar to Plato’s Closet. They like brand name items, current trends and junior styles. Both Plato’s Closet and Hut No. 8 accept men’s clothes, too, that follow the same guidelines. Think Buckle, Abercrombie and H&M.

Sweet Repeat (2504 W. Park Row, Pantego) is a great place for your more-mature womens’ brands. This is a great place to sell those Banana dresses you can’t squeeze into anymore and Gap jeans that you just don’t love. They also have loads of trendy, new jewelry here to jazz up your outfits. They also accept handbags and shoes.

Rerun Consignment Boutique (3603 W. Park Row, Pantego) is the spot to drop your super high-end items. Think that DVF dress that never looked good on you, that Kate Spade bag you’re just not into anymore and those expensive wedges you just never wear. What sets this store apart from the others is that it’s a consignment shop- meaning cash isn’t instant. Whereas Plato’s Closet will buy your items outright, Reruns will take your items on consignment. You receive 40% of the selling price and get a check once a month. You must have 6 items to open a consignment account.

Sometimes I just can’t make myself drag my bags into stores because my items are older and buyers can be picky. If this is you- try a Buy-Sell-Trade site on Facebook! Or apps such as Offer Up or 5 Miles. The appeal of these apps is huge. Unlike these shops, where you need to have a large pile of stuff to make it worth the trip and you are paid a fixed price per item- on BST sites, you set your price! You can also move at your own pace! Have five items to list today? Do it! You can list 10 more tomorrow if you need to! You also aren’t limited to clothing. You can sell kitchen wares, furniture, you name it!

Now go purge those closets and make some money!
