Big Things are Happening at the Arlington Highlands!

A long-standing shopping and entertainment mecca in the Arlington area, the Arlington Highlands is undergoing changes to make the space even more welcoming.

Kendra Scott. Pottery Barn Outlet. These are just a few of the exciting retailers who have decided to open up shop at the Arlington Highlands within the past year. Color Me Mine, a fun arts and crafts spot for all ages, is set to open this spring. These retailers join the stores, restaurants and entertainment destinations you've come to know and love at the Highlands, including Old Navy, Gloria's and Studio Movie Grill to name a few.

The Arlington Highlands gets a glow up!

On April 1, 2025, The Highlands debuted a $30 million renovation (phase I) with a new greenspace located in the strip of shops that leads from I-20 to Studio Movie Grill... And the space is an absolutely welcome addition to this fabulous shopping area. The greenspace includes space to walk and play as well as seated areas to relax with friends and family (covered, of course, to keep the sun or rain off your back!). My sweet gymnast loved cartwheeling all the way down the greenspace on the turf. There are pretty water features dabbled throughout, as well.

Gorgeous new water feature at the Arlington Highlands.

Now patrons can grab a coffee from Starbucks or a to-go meal from spots such as Chicken Salad Chick or Freebird's and dine outside. Parents and friends can bring a few toys and enjoy some sunshine and chatter while the kids play in the wide-open area. Once the sun sets, the space lights up with 3,500 white lights that give the space a soft glow and make it perfect for hanging out with friends after hours. A powered, canopied stage completes the upgraded area and will be home to exciting concerts in the future!

Brand new covered seating area at the Arlington Highlands.

Even better, the Highlands will be hosting a series of FREE events open to all starting this spring. The first event to kick off the series is a MOMumental event on May 10. The event celebrates moms just in time for Mother's Day and includes activities such as making flower arrangements, checking out pampering stations, listening to live music and more. These events will continue monthly throughout the year as a way to celebrate the new space and the community that surrounds it.

Phase II of this project is expected to be finished by the end of 2025 and will feature additional park amenities perfect for families as well as new signage and facility upgrades.

We love love love the Arlington Highlands and are SO excited for all the new updates to this pretty space. Join us May 10 for the MOM-umental event... Hope to see everyone there!

Fall Round-up: Pumpkin Patches & Pumpkin Farms in the Arlington Area 2023

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers." ~ Anne of Green Gables

It's October! That means it's time for pumpkin patches, hayrides and all things slightly spooky.

This is my favorite time of year. I have two October babies and a love of Halloween.

This month, the EA Crew plans to celebrate spooky season by getting spooked at Fright Fest at Six Flags Over Texas, catching a chilling performance featuring Edgar Allen Poe's creepiest creations at the Brian Clowdus Experience in Granbury, having nightmares after driving through Arlington's creepiest car wash, stepping into a pumpkin wonderland at Pumpkin Nights and more! Have a Halloween suggestion? Email it to me, pretty please!

However, if you are looking for an experience that is more cute than creepy and lets you experience all things fall without the fright, you need a pumpkin patch! Here are a few great ones in the area you won't want to miss.

Pumpkin patch

Arlington-area pumpkin patches 2023

Pumpkin patches are fields of pumpkins for kids to wander through (and purchase!) that have a few photo set ups as well as some games and activities. They are usually free.

St. John the Apostle, by Kohl's on Green Oaks, has been a favorite for years. Pose for cute pictures, shop for pumpkins and more. They even host story time at this area favorite!

First Christian Church on Collins & Park Row has some fun games and photo opportunities for kiddos. And, of course, pumpkins of all sizes.

St. John Lutheran Church in Mansfield at Walnut Creek & Debbie is a great spot for fall photos and all things pumpkin.

The Woods United Methodist Church in Grand Prairie at 20 & Lake Ridge has 1,000s of pumpkins to delight all ages and tons of cute photo opps to boot!

DFW-area pumpkin farms 2023

Pumpkin farms, at least these on my list, are different from patches because pumpkin farms usually cost money and are all-day activities with tons of fun for all ages. Most of the farms on this list could keep your kiddos happy for an entire afternoon and into the evening. Plan accordingly!

Shadow Creek Pumpkin Farm in Midlothian will have your kids off electronics and engaging in good old-fashioned fun like it's their job! Wander through the maze, play on the hay bales. Too much fun to list here. $17 per person.

Country Critters Farm in Alvarado has a fun pumpkin patch and petting zoo the kids will love. Play on the bounce pillow, go on train rides, play in the maze and the list goes on! $15 per person.

Hall's Pumpkin Farm in Grapevine offers hayrides, a corn maze and more. We hosted a birthday party here when my kids were little- this has been a favorite for years! Only $5 per person Monday- Thursday, $15 on the weekends.

Mainstay Farms in Cleburne is a spot where a kid can be a kid- and adults can be kids for the day, too! Lots of awesome activities keep kiddos of all ages happy all day, sans screens! Tickets start at $25 on the weekends if you buy in advance online.

Fritz Park Petting Zoo in Irving is the perfect low-cost activity for littles. Bring young kiddos here to interact with animals, play games and find a perfect pumpkin for only $5 a person! Definitely a must if your kids are younger (This spot is the perfect size and experience for the under 10 set).

Notably absent from this list this year is the Flower Mount Pumpkin Patch, which won't be opening for the 2023 season. Super sad about this one- it was a favorite!

If I've missed a spot in the area that needs to be added to this list, please let me know! I'll do my best to get it added.

Happy Fall y'all!

Spring Break Guide 2023: Adventure On, DFW!

There's no doubt about it- Dallas/Fort Worth is the place to be. Especially during Spring Break! From indoor waterparks to adventure playlands and more, DFW has something for everyone this March.

I'm rolling out my annual Spring Break Guide today, so I've gone back through my old posts about places to go and things to do. Y'all- I'm constantly amazed at all the awesome offerings for families and kids of all ages all over the Metroplex. But this year... Guys. There are SO many new businesses (or awesome new offerings at some tried and true favorite businesses!) that have cropped up to keep your kids active and engaged this Spring Break (and beyond!). So, if travel isn't in the plan or budget this year, don't worry. Check out all these fantastic new spots in the greater DFW area and your kids won't have a chance to say "I'm bored!"

Spring Break Guide

New spots in DFW to check out for Spring Break 2023

Dallas Area

The Fowling Warehouse (Plano)- Nope, that's not a typo, that's a new thing you can check out in Plano! Fowling is a combination of two American favorites- football and bowling! So grab a bite (and maybe a beverage, if that's your thing!) and get fowling. Perfect for groups and all ages, this game will get you active and having fun. I can't wait to check it out!

Two Bit Circus (Dallas- Northpark Mall area)- I featured this spot on my social channels over the holidays and we loved it so much! Two Bit Circus is brought to you by the son of the founder of Chuck E Cheese- so you know this family knows fun! Indulge in so many VR games or go a bit old school with the arcade games. There are light bites as well as drinks available. Trust me- this spot is a blast for kids of all ages!

Two Bit Circus Dallas
Enjoying family time at the new Two Bit Circus in Dallas.

Game Show Battles (Dallas- Galleria area)- Grab your besties and duke it out, game show style! Choose between two different showdowns and then challenge your opponents to some crazy-fun competitions. Perfect if you have a big family and want to claim bragging rights or for going head-to-head with another family. Everyone will have a blast!

Fort Worth Area

Sandbox VR (Fort Worth- Arts District)- Have a gamer at home? Actually, the answer is irrelevant... Sandbox VR is a seriously fun gaming and VR experience for the whole family or set of friends or whomever! We went a few months ago and haven't stopped talking about it. You put on VR headsets and embark on a journey based on which scene you select. We were pirates! Gaming really isn't even my jam and I would go back and do this many more times! Perfect for spring break fun.

Sandbox VR Fort Worth
Family time at Sandbox VR in Fort Worth.

Bolder Adventure Park (Grand Prairie)- Adventure on, friends! This brand new spot at Epic Central in Grand Prairie is for the adventure seekers and the adventurous at heart. Rope courses, zip lines, ice skating, bumper cars, archery, adventure nets... You name it, this indoor facility has it. Your kids will be able to climb and play all day- when I take mine I plan to see them for little else than water breaks!

Go Ape (Arlington)- I'm so excited that Arlington officially has its own outdoor adventure course! Located at River Legacy, this course is for thrill seekers. I visited the Plano location last year and conquered my fear of being high off the ground being help up by a single rope. It was actually a blast! There are minimum age requirements, though, so check that before you go.

Favorite haunts with new attractions you won't want to miss

In addition to all of these exciting new attractions that have opened in the past year in DFW, let's not forget all the awesome spots that have made DFW the place to be for years now! Although you have probably visited several of these spots before, they each have recently opened new attractions that may make them feel fresh and fun again for you and your kids this Spring Break!

Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington)- Aquaman launches March 11! This ride is supposed to be one-of-a-kind, launching riders backward and forward and ending with a massive splashdown. While I could maybe give this one a miss (fine, I'll ride it once. Once! Simply to say I've ridden it), my kids would lose their minds for something this fun-sounding.

Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark (Grand Prairie)- Our favorite indoor waterpark has a brand new slide to get excited about- Locura! With a 40-foot drop and a 360 degree horizontal loop, this ride sounds terrifying- I mean awesome! Seriously, we love Epic because there is so much for the kids and see and do. Perfect for the whole family, Epic is a great way to get excited about pool time this summer.

Trader's Village (Grand Prairie)- If you are looking for affordable fun for the whole family, this is it! Trader's Village is open during the week for Spring Break and the rides area features a brand new coaster for kids to get excited about, the Prairie Screamer! The low height requirement means it will be fun for (almost) everyone in your party, and an all-day wristband for unlimited rides starts at $15.

I could type another 2,000 words on all the fun things to do in area with kids. If you have little little ones, don't forget Play Street Museum in Mansfield or Project Play in Hurst. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is great for younger kids and the Perot Museum is wonderful for all ages. Jade Waters at the Hilton Anatole opens March 3 if you are willing to brave the cooler temps for outdoor water fun or you can check out Cove at the Lakefront in Little Elm for a less-expensive indoor waterpark option.  There is iFly and Alley Cats and Main Event and Urban Air and seriously guys I could ramble and ramble. If you're looking for fun for your kids in DFW this Spring Break and can't find it on this list, send me a message or shoot me an email. I'd love to help you navigate all the awesome offerings in the area. And if you own or offer one of the awesome offerings in this area, message me about coming and featuring your spot, too!

Happy Holidays! Shows + Performances to Ring in the Season in the Arlington Area

Nothing delights this time of year like a holiday performance. If you are looking to spread some holiday cheer by seeing local performance of one of your favorite holiday shows, look no further! EA has your comprehensive guide to Arlington-area holiday shows.

I can still remember my favorite holiday show I've ever seen live- The Radio City Rockettes at the Rosemont Horizon in the Chicagoland area. I must have been 13 or so the first time we went, and, WOW, those high kicks! As someone who grew up dancing, I love nothing more than watching those talented women dance their hearts out in flashy, sparkly dresses up on stage. I hope to take my own daughters to see the Rockettes some day.

Until then, though, I love seeing all the fun performances of my holiday favorites all around the Arlington area. Forget professional actors- I adore nothing more than seeing a local student (or young child!) tackle the role of Buddy the Elf or Tiny Tim. And to see tiny dancers perform The Nutcracker... It's truly what the holiday season is all about!

This year we are lucky enough to have multiple performances spanning multiple weeks of some of our favorite holiday shows right here in the Arlington area. Whether you want funny, or serious, or heartfelt, you are sure to find something that will give you the warm fuzzies this December and leave you ready to spread some holiday cheer. No need to drive to Fort Worth or hoof it all the way to Dallas- Arlington and the surrounding area has tons of opportunities for you to see your favorite shows.

So dust off your Sunday best and get ready to get in the holiday spirit!

Plant Life: The Best Places to Buy Plants in the Arlington Area

So... I'm not great with plants. I have noble intentions every year of being an honorable plant mom, whose home is filled with leafy greens hanging from curtain rods and decorating table tops. I know they are good for people in so many ways- seeing them is supposed to help reduce anxiety and so many other great things.

But I just usually forget to water them until its too late. Or I remember, like, every day for about two weeks, and I over-water them, which, as it turns out, isn't so great for plants either. Really, I can't win.

But I just did an article for Zulily about house plants- best ones for beginners, best plants for indoors, best plants for outdoors- so I'm starting off my next round of plant ownership totally inspired. I can keep babies and pets alive! Plants shouldn't be that difficult for me.

Plant party! Or... the level of plant ownership I aspire to...

So I've been shopping around, trying to determine which plants would do well in home. Which will achieve my desired look, which will flourish in my home (I have a surprisingly dark first floor because of a combination of low ceilings and lots of trees!) and which plants need the least amount of water in case I (unintentionally, obviously!) forget to water them. I also probably need some, um, professional guidance, in all of this. SO, I've put together a list of the top five places in the Arlington area to go to for plant advice and gorgeous greenery. Because plants are pretty.

Trying to teach my daughter about the benefits of plant ownership.

Top 5 Spots in the Arlington Area to Buy Plants

1. Green's Produce and Plants. This Arkansas Lane shop is hardly a secret, but it is one of my favorite places to shop in the area for produce and plants! I love wandering this shop when I have extra time or need dinner inspiration. Plus they host an awesome pumpkin-themed free activity every fall that my kids go gaga for. Love this local business!

2. Pat's Plants and Gifts. This local Grand Prairie plant stop will help get your started on your journey to being a plant parent. Grab everything from greenery to pretty pots to fun yard decor here.

3. The Tree Place. I can't tell you how many times I've driven past this spot on I-20 with the intention of stopping and staying a while. Here you can snag trees, plants, vegetables, herbs and flowers and more.

4. Mansfield Gardens. Your one-stop shop for gorgeous flowers in the Mansfield area, this garden retailer offers a variety of plants and greenery for your garden. Sign up for their emails to receive specials right in your inbox!

5. Calloway's Nursery. Calloway's may not be a local spot like the other nurseries on this list, but let me tell you why I love Calloway's. Number one- they host an amazing fall festival each October where your kids can get free pumpkins, free snacks and free face-painting. We have attended yearly since my kids were babies and it always feels like fall when we head to Calloway's! Number two- they've done great, free Girl Scout programming for me through the years. I love love love Calloway's! Plus, there are two Arlington locations and one in Mansfield, meaning it isn't a far drive no matter where in the area you live!

Flowers!

It Pays to Be Green: How to Maximize BYO Rewards

April is Earth Month (and Earth Day is 4/22). What are you doing to help the environment?

I have a trunk full of reusable shopping bags. Some I'm gotten for free at various events through the years, or just from shopping at retailers such as Lululemon, who package all of their purchases in them. Others I have paid for at check out because they were just so cute! There is no shortage of reusable shopping bags in my life... The kicker for me is actually remembering to bring them when I go shopping! Especially if the store offers a bring-your-own-bag discount. What a waste to NOT bring all the bags in my garage.

Zulily recently asked me to do an article on the top kitchen gadgets you need in your life to make your kitchen less wasteful. Some of these fixes are easy- stop using plastic sandwich baggies and throw-away silverware! Others are harder- like kitchen composting. I want to get there! I'm just... not there yet.

Get a discount for bringing your own bag to certain stores.

But writing this article really gave me pause. I know I'm not great with my environmental impact. We put out two or three overflowing trash bags for pick up each week. I try to recycle, but, sometimes I simply don't because it's a lot of work. I let my kids bring chips and dried fruit to school in plastic sandwich baggies and we use paper plates that we toss in the trash more than I should probably admit.

So, I need to make a few changes. Luckily, stores are starting to incentivize people like me to make these changes! Some big companies are beginning to adopt policies that encourage you to reduce, reuse and recycle. Here a few spots that reward you for your reduce, reuse, recycle efforts. A discount and a (small) step toward sustainability? Yes please!

Stores that reward you to Bring Your Own

Target: Bring your own reusable bags to Target and get $0.05 back per bag used. Plus, most stores have recycling stations for plastic bags that can't be placed in the green bins at your home.

Whole Foods Market: The Arlington store will give you $0.05 off your purchase for every reusable bag you use during your shopping trip. Plus, there are collection containers here for recycle cans, bottles and paper goods.

Starbucks: Get $0.10 off your java jolt when you bring your own reusable cup to collect your morning Starbucks fix in!

Dunkin' Donuts: Some locations offer a discount on coffee when you bring your own reusable cup, but this program was suspended for Covid. Keep your eyes peeled for when they start it back up!

Best Places to Shop for Patio Furniture in Arlington

Looking to spruce up your backyard to entertain guests this summer? Here are the best spots in the Arlington area to find patio furniture!

Summer is almost here! The air feels warmer, the kids are counting down until school is out and the pool is calling my name (although ours is still broken from the deep freeze- if anyone knows where to get parts for broken pumps, please please tell me!). My husband is redoing our entire back patio area so it is ready for guests for Summer 2021!

He has tasked me with picking out patio furniture. I've been on the hunt for a table we can place permanently outside to enjoy meals al fresco. I'm looking for something fun and fresh that will compliment our three-piece couch and fire pit table we already have. So I've been running all over town deciding what I like- and what's within our budget! Fun times!

I just did a whole article for Zulily about must-have patio furniture. Zulily also has tons of cute patio options for you that can be delivered right to your door! Check out Zulily for lots of great pieces including chairs, umbrellas and more. I have my eye on this awesome three-piece patio set right now!

The cutest patio set I have my eye on from IKEA in Grand Prairie.

If you are on the hunt for patio furniture and want to see it in person in the Arlington area, here are the best spots I've found to get your hands on great furniture in the area!

7 Great Spots to Shop for Patio Furniture in the Arlington Area

1. The Backyard Store, Pantego: This is the only spot I've found that is truly a local business. Tons of great styles of patio furniture on Pioneer Parkway in Pantego. They also do outdoor kitchens! Bucket list item for me for sure!

2. The Chair King: The Chair King is actually a Texas chain that started in Houston. Lots of gorgeous patio furniture plus grills and outdoor accessories. I'm shopping here for a grill for hubby for Father's Day... Now I just need someone to tell me which type to get!

3. Big Lots: Okay, so Big Lots is just a nationwide retailer. But have you seen their patio furniture? If you are on a budget, Big Lots is a great place to start! Lots of great furniture, and sometimes you can find coupons online to apply toward your purchase!

4. At Home, Mansfield: At Home, at 287 and Broad in Mansfield, can be a bit overwhelming. This home superstore will have you wandering for hours, questioning whether or not you need pot holders or rugs or decorative trinkets. I have to go in here with my eyes on the prize. But if you want a one-stop shop for all of your outdoor needs, this might just be the spot for you! Decent prices, too.

5. Homegoods, Mansfield: I love wandering through the HomeGoods at 287 and Debbie looking for great homewares. This store tends to get some fantastic pieces you might not find elsewhere. The only downside? You can't waffle at this store. Items will be gone before you turn around! If you see something you like, grab it and don't look back! I still have major regrets over the absolute cutest cooler I saw there last summer and didn't snag when I had the chance...

6. Lamps Plus: I never would have thought to stop into Lamps Plus to look for patio furniture. Because, hello, it's called LAMPS Plus. Not Patio Furniture Plus. But they have some great outdoor options and reasonable prices, to boot! Definitely check them out.

7. IKEA, Grand Prairie: Nothing like furniture from IKEA to test a marriage, amiright? I was wandering through IKEA last week and fell in love with the cutest outdoor set (pictured at the top of the article). My husband gave me a firm maybe and said he won't consider saying yes until I let him know exactly how many pieces the set comes in... I just keep reminding him we need to show off the deck he is working really hard to rebuild this spring!

The Best Places to Board Your Pets in the Arlington Area

We are between pets right now. Our beloved dog, Kenzi, passed away in January of natural causes, and we (finally, mostly I) haven't been ready to welcome a new furry pet into our home just yet.

If you are facing the loss of a pet, read the article I wrote for Zulily about how to help kids cope with losing a furry friend here.

When we did have a dog, though, this is the time of year I would start to stress about making plans for her during our summer travel. I always wanted Kenzi to have a place where she could play and be well cared for when we were off on our summer adventures.

So I've rounded up five of the best places to board dogs in the Arlington area. These spots all have plush accommodations for your beloved pets and will keep them happy and healthy until you can be with them again.

5 great places to board your dog in the Arlington area.

Best Places to Board a Dog in the Arlington Area

1. Richter Animal Hospital and Pet Resort- The vets at this hospital at 287 & Sublett were the ones who took care of our sweet dog in her older years. The facility is very well kept, and the pet resort comes highly recommended.

2. Pet Resort in The Gardens- This central spot, located near Pioneer Parkway & Bowen, gives new clients one free night of boarding! The Pet Resort also offers doggie day care as well as dog training and bathing. Who doesn't love a one-stop shop?

3. Cozy Pup Resort- Run by an awesome teacher at Corey Academy, the Cozy Pup Resort is the spot where we will send our next furry friend when he or she needs to be boarded. My girls adore Ms. Evans, their dance teacher, and I can refer you to a number of mamas who would highly recommend your pup go stay at Cozy Pup Resort!

4. Wagtime Doggie Daycare- Situated in North Arlington near Whole Foods, this dog-loving spot will take great care of your pup when you are away. They offer daycare as well as overnight boarding and even offer punch cards to save you a bit of cash!

5. PawPaw's Doghouse- Okay, this spot is in Mansfield. What I love about this spot is the Sweet Barks Sanctuary Senior Rescue that PawPaw's supports! Have you doggies boarded and groomed at this spot near Debbie & 1187 and know that your money is supporting rescued dogs. Learn more on their website.

Also worth a mention is Rover.com, where I have found a number of awesome dog walkers and boarders through the years!

I've also bought my fair share of clothing from here. I dare you to go in and NOT find something to buy!

5. Aria Grace Mansfield- Aria Grace is your spot if you've found an adorable shirt/bag/hat/etc. for Mom but want to go the extra mile and make it personal with embroidery or screenprinting! 6. AndiMac Candy Shack- Got a mama with a sweet tooth (like this mama right here!)? Treat her to all kinds of sweet confections and delicious treats from AndiMac Candy Shack in downtown Mansfield.

Does mom need a spa day? How about a gift card for a massage or other spa services at Sanford Inn & Spa? Or a gift certificate for a date night with her SO at Urban Alchemy for wine or coffee?

Where are you shopping for treats for mom this Mother's Day?

Different Types of Tea & the Best Places to get Tea in Arlington, TX

Did you know that herbal teas aren't actually teas?

I had NO idea.

A tea comes from tea leaves. An herbal tisane is a beverage that includes herbs and other ingredients but no actual tea leaves. So the chamomile tea I drink at bedtime isn't actually a tea. Mind. Blown.

My favorite teas with my favorite mug!

Check out the full article I did for Zulily here, along with lots of in-depth info about tea!

Different Types of Tea

There are four different types of tea: black, green, oolong and white. Black tea is the most widely consumed tea in the world, and it is called black tea because the tea leaves turn black during the oxidation process. Green tea is generally thought of as the healthiest tea because the leaves do not undergo oxidation.. Oolong tea is considered the middle man between black tea and green tea because the leaves ferment for a short amount of time. White tea is considered to be the most natural tea because the tea leaves are not oxidized, rather picked and sun-dried.

Best Places to Grab a Tea or Coffee in the Arlington Area

Craving a piping hot cup of coffee or tea? I can relate! While I'm a mega fan of Starbucks (and its drive-thru!), I do also love to support local. Try one of these great spots that make this city great!

Salter Brothers Coffee Roasters, 400 E. Division St., Arlington- artisan coffee, baked goods and hot and iced teas in downtown Arlington.

Grounds & Gold Co., 4130 S. Bowen Rd., Arlington- this gorgeous space with delightful fare will be your favorite new spot to meet a friend for a chat and a bite or open up your laptop and stay awhile!

Savor Coffee Bar & Eatery, 1101 E. Bardin Rd., Arlingon- lots of fantastic choices here, including Vegan fare. Plenty of space to hang out and get some work done.

Inclusion Coffee, 101 E. Abram St., Arlington- this UTA hot spot is two-levels of posh space designed to make you cozy. Reserve the front room for meetings and don't pass on the baked goods- they are SO good.

White Rhino Coffee, 401 E. Border St., Arlington- This new spot (it just opened in December!) has a drive-thru! Plus lots of space to sit and get some work done or catch up with a friend. It even has outdoor seating for when the weather warms up.

Flying Squirrel Coffee Co., 110 N Main St., Mansfield- this quaint spot in downtown Mansfield will make you think you've stepped onto the set of a Hallmark movie.

Now... Who is meeting me for a tea and coffee date?!

Best of Arlington: Town Talk Foods

When it comes to shopping, I love a good treasure hunt.

Sure, I can appreciate walking into a typical grocery store and knowing exactly where each product I need is and grabbing it, paying for it and enjoying it. There is definitely something to be said for simplicity and ease.

But I also love the thrill of finding a good deal and seeing how many unique finds I can haul home and prepare for my family. And how inexpensively I can compile a delicious meal for the dinner table.

This, friends, is where Town Talk comes in to this conversation!

Town Talks Foods has been a Fort Worth staple since 1954. In June, Town Talk came to Arlington, debuting a location by Arlington-based owner Tom Brown, who took over Town Talk in 2013. Arlington's location is at 2320 S. Collins Street, at the intersection of Collins and Arkansas.

I got to meet with Tom, the owner, this past Monday, and talk to him about opening Town Talk in Arlington. First off, Tom was born and raised in Arlington, and opening a location locally was really a long-term goal realized for him! Hearing him talk about his store was incredible- he's so passionate!

If you haven't been by yet, you are most certainly missing out!

I admit, I didn't really know what a salvage grocery store was during my first visit. I wandered the aisles, eyeing lots of foods I had never heard of before. Many packages were past their sell-by dates. Some prices were good. Some were really, really good. The store was organized in a similar way to a regular store, but there was no guarantee of what was on the shelves. There was no guarantee that a specific item I needed would be on the shelf at any given time.

What blew my mind, though, about Town Talk, was the fact that they work with plethora of different vendors, purchasing close outs or quick sale items at deeply discounted prices so they can pass the savings on to consumers. Food waste in the US is something you hear about semi-regularly but you (or I, at least) don't necessarily give much thought to. Town Talk is able to snap up a lot of items that might otherwise go to waste and bring them to us. On this last trip I made, I purchased plant-based frozen meals I normally pay $5 for at Sprouts for $2. I purchased Annie's pizza bagels, my girls' favorite, for $2 (they are normally at least $4 at typical grocery stores). I grabbed grapes at two full bags for $1! My $100 haul from Town Talk looks very, very different from my $100 haul from Target or Kroger.

I also learned that Town Talk has a lot of items from restaurants that were not going to be used. While Town Talk can't advertise these items as "excessive fries from XXX," that's exactly what they have bundled in the freezer section, ready for your air fryer or deep fryer. They get meat and sides from a variety of restaurants you probably eat at regularly (because I do!) that weren't sent to stores for this reason or that. So now you can purchase them, at a fraction of the cost, and prepare them at home. Score!

I've seen some negative chatter on local Facebook groups about food past its best by date and salvage grocery stores, so I discussed this with Tom. I admit, I tend to steer clear of items that are too far past best by dates. I'm fine going back a few months (I have purchased chips that are two months gone and frozen pizzas a month or two out), but I get leery going more than about six months past, especially depending on the nature of the item. If you, like me, get nervous about food past it's Best By date, here is an article that really opened my eyes: Food Expiration Dates. Another bit of info that blew my mind- do you know how much grocery stores pay each month to dump food that can no longer be sold? Y'all... These statistics are nuts. Town Talk alone pays about $4,000 per month to dump food that can no longer be sold. Can you imagine what a monthly bill must be for a mega store such as Walmart or Kroger?

Town Talk is truly a gem of a store that we are lucky to have here in Arlington. Not only is it owned by a local resident, it provides inexpensive food to families from all walks of life. Tom gives tours of the store every Thursday at 10, and he loves what he does. Stop in and visit with him during that regular meet up, or call him up and request a tour any time. He will tell you all about this great store and the suppliers from whom he gets his products. I love hearing from business owners who are passionate about their businesses!

Have you been to Town Talk? I'd love to hear about the steals and deals you've found there in the comments!
